The Leake County Department of Human Services is a department which is co-managed by the County and the State of Mississippi, offering many services to those in need. Some of the services we provide are Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Food Stamps, and health benefits (Medicaid)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mississippi Department of Human Services is to provide services for people in need by optimizing all available resources to sustain the family unit and encourage family values, thereby promoting self-sufficiency and personal responsibility for all Mississippians.

Division of Economic Assistance

The Division of Economic Assistance (DEA) provides essential services to low-income individuals and families in Mississippi with the ultimate goal of assisting them to become self-sufficient. Services include food stamps, money payments, training and supportive services focused on employment opportunities and eligibility determination for Medicaid. Mississippi continues to be one of the leading states in designing and implementing welfare reform programs as evidenced by the significant decrease in TANF caseload because families are employed. The TANF state plan supports the goal of providing care to the truly needy while giving people the opportunity – through employment and transitional benefits, Medicaid and child care assistance – to make the change from welfare to work.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families The TANF program

TANF – Temporary Assistance for Needy Families The TANF program, administered by the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS), provides assistance for needy families with children up to age 18 years without regard to race, creed, color, gender, age, disability or national origin. Monthly TANF money payments are made for children and their needy caretaker relatives who do not have enough income or resources to meet their everyday needs by state Program standards.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a national health care program. It helps pay for medical services for low-income people. For those eligible for full Medicaid services, Medicaid is paid to providers of health care. Providers are doctors, hospitals and pharmacists who take Medicaid. We strive to provide financial assistance for the provision of quality health services to our beneficiaries with professionalism, integrity, compassion and commitment. We are advocates for, and accountable to the people we serve.

Food Stamps

The Food Stamp Program provides monthly benefits that help low income households buy the food they need for good health. Eligibility criteria, income and resource limits and allotment maximums per household size are set by federal laws and regulations governing the Food Stamps Program under USDA. A person who meets one of the following criteria may qualify for food stamps:

  1. Work for low wages.
  2. Unemployed or work part-time.
  3. Receive TANF, SSI or other assistance payments.
  4. Elderly or disabled and live on a small income.
